Spider-Man: Homecoming
Rating: 2.5/5

Spider-Man: Homecoming was highly anticipated by not only myself and friends but the biggest Spider-Man fan I know…my Dad.

We went into the movie with mixed expectations, hoping for an amazing movie but not quite sure if it was gong to deliver how we wanted.

The movie illustrates the story of an early Spider-Man, as Peter Parker is just now coming into his wall-crawling alter ego. Introducing a classic villain such as the Vulture was an attractive component of this story and it was written in nicely, but there were a few giant pieces missing.

While most people found this movie refreshingly nerdy, I thought it was too much “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” and not enough “off the comic page” dynamic. Although it did live up to a more lighthearted tone and generally more silly like people were hoping for, some extremely essential bits of the Spidey storyline were completely absent.

Most writers and critics are so thankful that these pieces weren't included, but in my opinion it severely watered down the storyline in a way that was unforgivable for both me and my Dad. Some plot holes that were left in the movie felt straight-up sacrilegious and weren't appreciated at all (No Spider-Sense? C'mon!).

Don't get me wrong, it's a well produced movie and it was generally entertaining, but as a Marvel fan it was insulting to think that this is what they came up with for the latest reboot (especially after Civil War being as good as it was).

It almost felt like Spider-Man was written into the story of Civil War better than the solo movie in a number of ways. I realize that this reboot is just that and is illustrating the early phases of Peter Parker becoming the Spider-Man, but it was pretty poorly done in my opinion.

To wrap this up, Spider-Man: Homecoming was funny and cute, but extremely underwhelming. Even the after credits scenes were lacking and I am definitely disappointed in Marvel’s efforts with this one.
